The first issue of the magazine, a collaboration between Folkwang University of the Arts, Museum Folkwang, the Historical Archive Krupp, and the Ruhr Museum, was a remarkable joint effort to produce a high-caliber magazine celebrating Essen’s position as a “City of Photography.” The magazine beautifully stages the city’s vibrant photography scene, showcasing the diverse work of emerging talents and established photographers alike.
The magazine also played a pivotal role in Essen’s bid to host the German Institute for Photography at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein campus. Although Düsseldorf ultimately won, the magazine succeeded in positioning Essen as a major cultural hub for photography, reflecting the city’s strong commitment to the medium and its future in photographic innovation.
